Houston-- The University of Houston ccross country team competed against Lamar University in the Cougar Classic Friday at Buffalo Bayou Park. This was the only home meet for the Cougars during the 2006 season.
The meet was a relay format. The men's teams ran an eight-mile race with each team member running two miles twice. The women's teams ran a four-mile relay with each team member running two miles once.
The top three teams for each race received a t-shirt.
The top male team was Steve Magness and Sesar Figueroa. The team competed unattached and finished with a time of 37.01. The second place team was senior Calum Neff and freshman Juston Perez with a time of 38.58. Lamar runners Frank Bwambale and Ewan Simpson finished third with a time of 39.07.
The women's teams were led by Lamar's Amanda King and Stacey Monteau. The pair finished the race in 22.50. Junior Oumama Hallal and freshman Jessica Cook led the way for the Cougars, finishing fourth with a time of 23.15.
"This is such a young group and I am pretty pleased with how the newcomers performed," head cross country coach Teresa Fuqua said. "With the older kids I knew what to expect, but with the new group it's fun to see how they will perform and I thought they performed well. It was very encouraging."
The Cougars will next be in action when they split, Sept. 16, for the Hawai'i Big Wave Classic and the Texas A&M Invitational.
