Houston Rolls Over Tulane, 82-57

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Oliver Lafayette scored 19 points and Brian Latham added a season-high 18 points and six assists to lead Houston to a 82-57 victory over Tulane Wednesday.
Houston (11-6, 2-3) drained 60 percent of its shots in the first half (21-of-58) and the defense limited the Green Wave (5-12, 1-4 Conference USA) to 20 second-half points.
Lafayette scored five of Houston's 14 3-pointers. Ramon Dyer scored 14 points and Lanny Smith added 11. for the Cougars, who improved their record to 11-6 overall and 2-3 in Conference USA play.
The game was tied at 13-13 with 15:45 left to play in the first half, when Houston used 15-4 run to take control of the game. THe Cougars led 31-19 when Lafayette made back-to-back treys around a dunk by Donnie Stith to extend Houston's lead to 34-21 with 10:07 remaining in the opening period. The Cougars closed out the first half with a 25-16 run to take a 59-37 lead into halftime.
Houston came back to score the first eight points in the second half on a three-point basket by Smith, a lay-up and free throw by Latham and a baseline jump shot by Jahmar Thorpe to lead 67-37 with 16:47 left to play. The Cougars cruised the rest of the way to win its first game against the Green Wave since 2002.
Matt Wheaton led Tulane with 11 points, as the Cougars held Tulane's bigger post players Quincy Davis and David Gomez to nine points each.
The Cougars return home to play host to Marshall on Saturday, January 28 in Hofheinz Pavilion at 7:00 p.m. Following Saturday night's game, fans get the autographs of all Cougar players and head coach Tom Penders on the concourse near the Holman Street entrance.
