HOUSTON (AP) - Jasper Johnson scored the final four points for Southern Mississippi, which withstood two potential tying shots in the final seconds to beat Houston 75-72 in triple overtime on Tuesday night.
Andre Owens and Lanny Smith, who led Houston with a career-high 31 points, missed the 3-pointers in the final four seconds.
Smith sent the game into overtime on a 3-pointer with 8.6 seconds remaining.
Johnson's jumper in the first overtime sent the game to double overtime, in which the Cougars never led.
Charles Gaines had 20 points and 18 rebounds - his 10th double-double of the season - before fouling out in the second overtime for Southern Miss (11-8, 4-4 Conference USA). Johnson scored 14 points and Greg Johnson had 11.
Smith, who was 9-of-18 from the field, was the only double-figure scorer for the Cougars (8-11, 2-6).
It was Houston's first triple overtime game since 1981.
