HOUSTON - In what will be the Cougars' final home match of the 2004 season as well as Senior Night, the Cougar spikers are set to take on cross-town rival Rice for the second time in the 2004 season, on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
Houston (8-17, 5-6 C-USA) is coming off of a tough 3-2 loss to the visiting TCU Horned Frogs over the weekend that snapped the Cougars' four-game winning streak, while the Owls (22-3, 11-1 WAC) come in riding a four-match winning streak of their own and are 15-1 in their last 16 outings.
In the first outing between the two schools this season, Rice swept the match 3-0 from the Cougars in a 30-28, 33-31 and 30-20 win.
However, in the all-time series between the two schools, Houston holds a 53-9 advantage, but has dropped the last four meetings against the Owls. Tuesday's match also marks the 63rd meeting with one another, tied for the most times the Cougars have faced any one opponent.
For seniors Mirela Vasconcellos and Loure Dews, Tuesday's match will be their final home match as Cougars.
Both players will finish their careers as four-year letterwinners with the Cougars and will leave a lasting mark upon the program.
Dews, a Second Team All-Conference USA selection last season, is currently among the top 10 in all four blocking statistics, where she is No. 4 in block assists, No. 6 in blocks per game, No. 10 in block solos, and No. 7 in total blocks.
A versatile player for the Cougars over the last four years, Vasconcellos has seen time at setter and defensive specialist for Houston. Last season she led the team in assists with 1,021, and is No. 9 all-time assists leader for the Cougars, and is also No. 9 on the all-time digs lists.
After Tuesday's Senior Night match, the Cougars hit the road to finish out the season with stops at Saint Louis (13-15, 5-6) on Thursday, and Memphis (24-8, 8-3) on Saturday before the C-USA Tournament in Louisville, Ky., Nov. 19-22.
