BATON ROUGE, La. - Four Cougars posted double-doubles against Alabama on Friday night in Houston's come-from-behind victory at the Conference USA/SEC Challenge in Baton Rouge, La.
Down two games to none and facing defeat, the Cougars rallied to pull out the win in five games, with scores of 24-30, 26-30, 33-31, 30-25 and 15-7 in the games.
The win marked the first time this season that Houston had come back from a 2-0 deficit to take the match from its opponents. With the loss, Alabama falls to 20-9 on the year while Houston improves to 10-21 in 2004.
Senior Loure Dews led the Cougar attack, hitting .333 in the match with a match-high 22 kills on 51 swings and only five errors. Dews fell on dig short of a double-double with nine digs on the evening.
Right behind dews with 21 kills was sophomore Kelly McAnelly, who posted her 12th double-double of the season by adding 12 digs on the night, and a season-high three blocks.
Also reporting double-doubles was senior Mirela Vasconcellos, with 53 assists and 13 digs, junior Kariny Ritter, with 17 kills and a career-high 23 digs, and junior Jennifer Hohl, who turned in 24 handouts and 13 assists in the win.
As a team, Houston out killed the Crimson Tide 89-71, the most spikes for the Cougars this year. The Cougars also out hit the Tide .197-.173, including a blistering .458 performance from the Cougars in the decisive Game 5.
The Cougars close out the 2004 season with their final match of the year, Saturday, Nov. 27, at 7:00 p.m., against host institution LSU in the final match of the C-USA/SEC Challenge.
