MILLWAUKEE, Wisc. - In the first of two matches on the road this weekend, the Houston volleyball team fell 3-1 to Conference USA foe Marquette in Milwaukee on Friday night.
The match drops the Cougars to 3-4 in C-USA play and 4-15 overall, while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-2 and 14-6 overall.
The first game of the match saw Houston come out on fire. The Cougars hit a blistering .424 on their way to a 30-25 win. Unfortunately Houston struggled to break the .100 barrier in the following three games.
Marquette battled back to take control of the match with wins in Games 2 and 3 at 30-17 and 30-26. Facing the final and decisive Game 4, Houston was unable to pick up the offensive fire power it had in the first game, and fell 30-21 allowing the Golden Eagles to take the match.
Despite three players reaching double digits in kills, and a match high 16 kills by sophomore Kelly McAnelly, the Cougars managed to hit just .069 for the entire match.
Senior Loure Dews and sophomore Becca Sartori were the other two Cougars to reach double digits in kills with 12 and 15, respectively. Dews also had a team high five blocks on the evening.
Junior setter Jennifer Hohl turned in her fourth double double of the season with 44 assists and 14 digs. Junior libero Jaci Gonzalez picked up a match high 28 digs for Houston as well.
The Cougars will look to get back to the .500 mark in C-USA as they face DePaul Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in Chicago.
