Cougar Cross Country Teams Finish Second At Rice Invitational

Houston, Texas- - The University of Houston men's and women's cross country teams finished in second place at the Rice Invitational on Saturday. Both of Houston's teams had four of the top 11 runners in each race.
Senior Jessie Oakes led the Lady Cougars as she finished in second place in a time of 15:01. Houston's other top finishers in the women's race were Shawna Florida, Janay Covington and Terie Littlepage. Florida finished in sixth place with a time of 15:38, while Covington was ninth with a time of 15:45 and Littlepage was 11th with a time of 15:15. Veronica Ramirez rounded out Houston's team as she finished in 18th place with a time of 16:23.
In the men's division, sophomore Sesar Figueroa led the UH men's team with a third-place finishing time of 19:19. Junior Cole Dailey also finished in fifth place with a time of 19:47, while Brent Henson was in 10th place with a time of 19:54 and Jason Banes was 11th with a time of 19:59. Maurillio Sanchez finished in 13th place with a time of 20:00, while Paul Goodwin was 14th with a time of 20:01 and Ronnie Martinez was in 15th place with a time of 20:07. Alex Winstel rounded out Houston's runners as he finished in 17th place with a time of 20:31.
Kate Gorry of Rice was the individual women's champion with a time of 14:36 and the Owls won the team championship with 20 points, while Houston had 44 points and Sam Houston State was third with 62 points. TSU finished in fourth place with 104 points and the University of Texas-Dallas was in fifth place with 130 points.
Steve Magness of Rice was the individual men's champion with a time of 18:39 to lead Rice to the men's team title as well with 31 points. Houston was a close second with 33 points and Sam Houston State was third with 68 points. Texas Southern finished in fourth place and UT-Dallas had a fifth-place finish.
Houston will travel to Hawaii's Big Wave Classic next Saturday and will run in the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Invitational on October 3.
