Figueroa Leads Cougars to Second-Place Finish At Islander Invitational

Corpus Christi, Texas- - Sophomore Sesar Figueroa led the University of Houston men's cross country team to a second-place finish at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Invitational.
Figueroa had a third place finish as he completed the five-mile course in 25:38 to lead the Cougars, who had three of the top 10 runners in the race. Cole Dailey finished in seventh place with a time of 26:14, while Brent Henson had a ninth fastest time of 26:20.
In addition, Alex Winstel finished in 15th place with a time of 26:50 and Jason Banes was 17th in a time of 27:02. Maurillio Sanchez, Paul Goodwin and Ronnie Martinez were Houston's other runners in the race. Sanchez finished in 22nd place with a time of 27:20, while Goodwin was 25th in a time of 27:24, and Martinez finished in 28th place with a time of 27:37.
Westly Keating of Texas-Pan American was the individual champion with a time of 24:27 and Stephen Magness of Rice finished in second place with a time of 25:35. Rice won the men's team title with 40 points, while Houston was second with 48 points and Texas-Pan American was third with 71 points.
In the women's division, Janay Covington led Houston to a fourth-place finish as a team. Covington finished in third place as she completed the three-mile course in 18:11. Shawna Florida was Houston's next best runner as she finished in 19th place with a time of 19:13 and Terie Littlepage finished in 24th place with a time of 19:27. Veronica Ramirez finished in 25th place with a time of 19:35 and Cynthia Silva finished in 34th place with a time of 21:46. Houston's top runner this season Jessie Oakes did not complete in the race.
Katy Gorry of Rice was the women's individual champion with a time of 17:14 and Rice also won the team championship with 33 points. Texas-Arlington was second with 47 points and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was third with 53 points. Houston had a total of 104 points to finish in fourth place.
