Cougars Fall to Defending National Champion Stanford

GAINESVILLE, Florida - The University of Houston volleyball team was defeated by No. 1 Stanford 3-0 in the first day of the Campus USC Credit Union Invitational. The two-day tournament includes Houston (7-2,0-0), Stanford (8-0), Ohio (6-0) and host No. 6 Florida (5-1).
Stanford took an early lead to defeat Houston in three straight sets, 30-21, 30-19 and 30-17. The Cardinals lead the all-time series against the Cougars 8-0.
Middle hitter Loure Dews led the Cougar offense with eight kills two blocks. Outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek also added six kills, three digs and two blocks.
Freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez and Houston native Laura Koster led the Cougar defense with five digs apiece while setter Donna Sellen added 11 assists and two digs.
The Cougars posted a .098 hitting percentage, their lowest this season, and totaled only 25 kills in three matches. Stanford racked up a .467 hitting percentage and totaled 54 kills.
Stanford, who defeated Long Beach State on December 15, 2001 to win the National Championship, returns four starters and nine letterman this year. Stanford was led by Arlington, Texas, native Ashley Ivy, who posted 10 kills and three blocks.
National player of the Year Logan Tom is currently with the U.S. National Team in Germany at the World Championships and did not compete.
The Cougars will meet the winner of the Florida/Ohio match at noon tomorrow. Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion on October 4 when Houston battles conference rival Tulane at 7:30 p.m.
