HOUSTON, Texas - No. 5 DePaul downed No. 12 East Carolina, 3-0 (34-32, 30-17, 30-27) in the first round of the 2001 Healthy Choice C-USA Volleyball Tournament on Thursday at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Blue Demons (21-8 overall and 11-5 C-USA) advance to the quarterfinals and will meet No. 4 Houston on Friday at 8 p.m.
Senior Christa Dirr blasted a team-high 18 kills, while senior Stephanie Bishop notched her 26th double-double performance with 10 kills and 14 digs. Junior Katie Engel also contributed with 11 kills for a .310 attack percentage.
East Carolina fought hard in all three matches with senior Amanda Rudolph tallying a team-high 13 kills and nine digs. Defensively, the Pirates recorded 19 total blocks compared to DePaul's five. However, DePaul outhit with a team total of .319, while East Carolina posted a .205 hitting percentage.
Competing in their first C-USA Tournament, the Pirates end the 2001 season with an 8-21 overall record.
