Lady Cougars Finish Fourth At Texas A&M Invitational

College Station, Texas - Led by Jessica Oakes' fifth-place finish, the University of Houston women's cross country team finished in fourth place at the Texas A&M Invitational Saturday morning. Oakes completed the 5,000-meter course with a time of 23:27. Houston's Julie Perez also was 17th in the team scoring with a time of 24:15.
Texas A&M won both the men's and women's team titles at the meet as the Aggies won the men's division with 75 points and the women's title with 48 points.
Rice was second in the women's division with 84 points and Arkansas-Little Rock had 98 points to finish third ahead of Houston's 116 points.
Kathy Newberry was the individual champion as she competed unattached and finished the race with a time of 22:05. Sita Waru of McNeese State was the top women's collegiate runner with a time of 22:43.
Texas A&M's Juan De Bastos was the men's champion as he completed the 5-mile course in 26:09 to edge SMU's Dailbor Balgac, who had a time of 26:11.
The top individual runner for Houston was Jared Kuntz, who finished 67th with a time of 28:15. Toartou Kargou was 82nd with a time of 28:30.
