Mayra Gurrusquieta joined the Houston Athletics Communications staff in February 2022. She was promoted to Assistant Director for Communications in September 2023.
In this role, she serves as the primary contact for women’s basketball, cross country and track & field while overseeing the student internship program.
During the 2024 season, Gurrusquieta helped lead publicity efforts for Houston Track & Field’s NCAA Outdoor 100-meter Champion, Louie Hinchliffe, working with local, national and international media. She also assisted in the coverage of 2024 Paris Olympics for Silver Medalist, Shaun Maswanganyi and Bronze medalist, Louie Hinchliffe.
Before being promoted to her current position, Gurrusquieta worked as the Ted Nance Communications Assistant from February 2022 to August 2023. During that time, she served as the primary contact for women’s soccer, women’s tennis and women’s swimming & diving. Gurrusquieta was also the secondary contact for Houston Men’s Basketball during its 2022 Elite Eight and 2023 Sweet 16 runs.
Gurrusquieta helped lead publicity efforts for the seven-time American Athletic Conference Champions, Houston Swimming & Diving team.
Before her communications assistant role, Gurrusquieta worked as a student intern with Houston Athletics Communications from Aug. 2020 to Dec. 2021, where she assisted with soccer, football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and track & field.
Outside of Houston Athletics, Gurrusquieta has worked the 2024 CFP National Championship game, 2023 NCAA Men’s Final Four LOC and worked as a production assistant for Westwood One Radio with the NFL.
Gurrusquieta is a native of Houston, Texas, and graduated from the University of Houston in Dec. 2021, receiving her bachelor's degree in strategic communications with a concentration in public relations.
