HOUSTON, Texas - No. 6 Marquette knocked out No. 3 South Florida, 3-1 (30-24, 30-28, 30-32, 30-28) in the quarterfinals of the 2001 Healthy Choice C-USA Volleyball Tournament on Friday in Hofheinz Pavilion. The Golden Eagles' win not only marked the first upset of the 2001 tournament, but also snapped the Bulls 10-match win streak. Marquette (19-11) now advances to Saturday's semifinal round, where it will face No. 2 Louisville at 1 p.m.
"This was a fun match," said Marquette head coach Laura Farina. "We have preached all year long that this team can win when all 12 players are ready to play. Each one of them came out and contributed by playing hard and playing smart. This is what tournament action is all about and I am extremely happy for this team."
The Golden Eagles had five players in double-digits with All-Freshman honoree Jennifer Amobi leading the Marquette contingent with 21 kills and four block assists. Shannon Devine and Megan Markowski followed with 14 and 12 kills, respectively, while Danielle Hagen and Mehgan Devine both tallied 11 kills. Markowski also nabbed a match-high 17 digs and was only one away from tying her career-high of 18.
First team All-Conference Michelle Collier posted an impressive match, tallying a match-high 29 kills and 15 digs, while Jolene Patton followed with 15 kills, 11 digs and three service aces. Rachel Jobes led the Bulls' defensive front, tying a C-USA Tournament record with 11 block assists. (Louisville's Stacey Mercer claimed the tournament record of 11 block assists against the Bulls in the finals of the 2000 C-USA Tourney.)
South Florida ends the 2001 season with a 21-8 overall record.
