HOUSTON, Texas - No. 8 Memphis defeated No. 9 Tulane, 30 (31-29, 30-22, 30-20) in the third match of the first round at the 2001 Healthy Choice C-USA Volleyball Tournament at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Tigers (22-9 overall and 7-9 C-USA) advance to the quarterfinals where they will face No. 1. Cincinnati on Friday at 6 p.m.
"We did a great job putting our whole game plan together," said Memphis head coach Carrie Yerty. "Ginger (Garrett) and Adrianne (Edmonds) were termonaters for us. They stepped up and did a tremendous job for us."
Adrianne Edmonds fired a team-high 16 kills for a .368 hitting percentage, while adding 13 digs. Senior Amie Hamilton contributed with 14 digs and two service aces. She currently has 96 aces on the season, and only needs two more to hold the single-season school record for aces with 97. Ginger Garrett added a match-high three service aces and 11 kills.
Tulane stood strong in the first game, but was unable to gain any momentum in the final two games. Britney Hurst recorded 15 kills and 10 digs, marking her 18th double-double performance of the season. Deva Fowler finished the game with 10 kills, while freshman Katie Case chipped in 37 assists and 11 digs.
"I want to give a lot of credit to Memphis because they played with a lot of fight," said Tulane head coach Betsy Becker. "We never could get our cylinders fired up and get our rhythm flowing. We can learn a lot from this game and with four freshmen on our squad, our future is quite bright. We look forward to next year."
Tulane finished the season with a 16-14 overall record and 7-9 conference mark.
