HOUSTON, Texas - No. 6 Marquette rallied back after losing the first game to claim a 3-1 win over No. 11 Southern Miss in the first round of the 2001 Healthy Choice C-USA Volleyball Tournament at Hofheinz Pavilion. Marquette (18-11 overall and 9-7 conference) will now play No. 3 South Florida on Friday in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m.
All-Freshman honoree Jennifer Amobi led the Marquette contingent with a career-best 27 kills, a .522 attack percentage and seven digs. Senior Vesna Grbavac followed with 22 kills, while Danielle Hagen tallied a match-high 18 digs for the win.
"We were very lucky," said Marquette head coach Laura Farina. "Southern Miss played very well and came extremely prepared. After the first game, we had several players like Jennifer (Amobi) and Vesna (Grbavac) step up and get us the kills we needed. This team knows they will have to play better against South Florida on Friday, but it is nice to get one win under our belt."
Andrea Bush (24 kills, 14 digs) and Kelly Tribble (18 kills, 12 digs) combined to both post double-double performances, however Southern Miss was only able to hit .193 as a team.
Southern Miss ends the 2001 season with a 9-19 overall record and 4-12 conference mark.
