HOUSTON, Texas - Saint Louis' Colleen Hunter notched a match-high 20 kills to lead the Billikens to the quarterfinals of the 2001 Healthy Choice C-USA Volleyball Tournament
First team All-Conference Colleen Hunter blasted 20 kills to lead No. 7 Saint Louis Billikens to a 3-0 win over No. 10 Charlotte in the first match of the 2001 Healthy Choice C-USA Volleyball Tournament at Hofheinz Pavilion. With a winning score of 30-22, 30-26, 30-25 over Charlotte (15-15), Saint Louis (13-13) advances to the quarterfinal match against No. 2 Louisville on Friday at 1 p.m.
"Our team composure was outstanding. We never gave up, " said Saint Louis head coach Marilyn Nolen. "Shannan (Sweeney) had one of her best defensive games of the year and Colleen (Hunter) worked very hard throughout the match. We did a great job in blocking Charlotte's outside hitters and overall our defense played extremely well."
Hunter finished the game with a match-high 22 kills and a .395 attack percentage, while Brooke Minniear and Dani Apted led the defensive front with 21 and 13 digs, respectively. Ember Knobeloch also posted seven kills and four block assists.
For Charlotte, freshman Katie Hall tallied a team-high 11 kills and four blocks, while first team All-Conference Kathleen Ramos contributed 10 kills and a team-high 12 digs.
"This was not exactly the way we wanted the season to end, but we won't let it overshadow the progress we made this season," said head coach Lisa Marston. "We had a lot to be proud of this season and definitely excited about next season."
The 49ers end their season with a 15-15 overall mark and 5-11 conference record.
