WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- Houston has one of the best run defenses in the country this season. Entering this week, it's allowed an average of 74 yards per game, ranking fourth in the country. The Cougars have held their opponent to less than 75 yards in four of six games so far, including a -6 mark against Southern. Last week, Kansas State entered the week with the 13th best rushing offense in the country, averaging 241 yards per game, and Houston held it to 117, its lowest total by nearly 40 yards.
- Houston had arguably the best tight end in the country in 2025 and then went copy-paste with transfer Patrick Overmyer in 2026. At Kansas State, Overmyer tied the NCAA record for touchdown receptions by a tight end, hauling in four TD catches at Kansas State. His six touchdowns on the season leads the nation and his 399 receiving yards are the second most in the country. The 6-5 tight end from Kingwood, Texas hauled in a career-high 84 receiving yards in the season opener – third most in Week 1 and second most in the Power 4, and has hauled in touchdown passes in three different games (Southern, Texas Tech, Kansas State).
- Houston has dominated on the ground over the first six games of the season averaging 230 yards per game – 14th most nationally and fourth most in the Big 12 while allowing just 74 yards per game on defense – fourth fewest nationally.
- The Cougars offensive line has reached another level in 2026, excelling in both pass and run blocking. The unit has allowed just two tackles for loss per game on average heading into Week 7 along with 0.83 sacks per game, both ranking in the Top 15 nationally.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
- Saturday's game marks the first top 25 matchup inside TDECU Stadium since 2015 and the 15th top 25 home game for Houston. The Cougars are 11-7-3 in ranked games when the opponent is ranked higher and are 9-4-1 at home in ranked games. Houston has won three consecutive ranked matchups inside TDECU Stadium – all in 2015 – and have won five of the last six ranked games at home.
- Tight end Patrick Overmyer and punter Liam Dougherty were named the Big 12 Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week following their elite performances at Kansas State. Overmyer tied the tight end NCAA single-game receiving touchdown record by hauling in four TD passes. Dougherty boomed a 74-yard punt and broke the school record with 59.3 yards per punt set back in 2003.
- Houston has started the season ranked in the first 7 polls for the first time since 2016. The Cougars' matchup against Oklahoma State marks the first top 25 matchup inside TDECU Stadium since 2015.
- Houston and Oklahoma State played every year for 11 straight years (1951-61) before playing sparingly between 1986-2009. The teams have traded blows since 1986 with the Cougars going 4-3 in the last seven meetings. The Cougars will play on FOX in back-to-back games for the first time in program history.
- Head Coach Willie Fritz advanced to the Dodd Trophy Midseason Watch List earlier this week after being named to the preseason edition of the Watch List in August. He's one of two Big 12 coaches and one of three head coaches at a Texas school to make the list.
SCOUTING OKLAHOMA STATE
