Dual-threat quarterback key part of Cougars resurgence, national ranking
HOUSTON – Following back-to-back Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week awards, #22/22 Houston Football's junior quarterback Conner Weigman has been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, awarded to college football's most outstanding player.
Through nine games, Weigman has thrown for a single-season high 1,581 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 357 yards, the fourth-most yards by a Big 12 quarterback and the second most rushing touchdowns, nine, by a Big 12 signal caller. Weigman's 151.0 passer rating ranks sixth in the Big 12.
In Week 9 at Arizona State, Weigman became the first FBS quarterback to throw for 200 yards while adding a touchdown with no interceptions and rush for 100 yards and two touchdowns against a ranked opponent on the road since Kansas State's Adrian Martinez did so at Oklahoma in 2022.
He was also the first Houston quarterback to toss 200 yards and a touchdown and run for 100 and two touchdowns without committing a turnover since Greg Ward did so against Tennessee Tech in 2015. He was highly graded by Pro Football Focus for his performance, receiving an 85.7 offensive grade, 86.3 passer grade and an 84.6 passer grade when blitzed, all of which rank in the top 10 nationally.
The Cypress, Texas, native orchestrated his first-career fourth quarter come-from-behind win when he led the Cougars past Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., after trailing by 14 points with six minutes remaining to force overtime. Weigman orchestrated his second-career game winning drive against Arizona with a methodical 4:48 second drive to kill the clock and set up a game-winning field goal as time expired.
Weigman has twice been named a Davey O'Brien Great 8 quarterback this season while being named to multiple preseason award watch lists including the Johnny Unitas Award the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, the Comeback Player of the Year and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
The Cougars, led by Weigman, have earned a top 25 ranking in the AP and Coaches Poll for the first time since 2022 and take on West Virginia on Saturday at 11 a.m. inside TDECU Stadium.
