Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at Big 12 Championships

Sophomore Moa Svedenskiold earns second straight Top-Five showing at conference postseason tournament

Starting off No. 1 on the 6,249-yard, par-71 course, the Halmstad, Sweden, native birdied her first hole and finished the day with 10 straight pars for her team-leading fourth Top-10 finish of the year.
With her performance, Svedenskiold was named to the 10-woman All-Big 12 Tournament Team and also
earned her second straight Top-Five finish at a conference championships. She posted a score of 8-under 208 to finish second at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Fla., on April 17-19, 2023.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 297 in the Final Round and finished sixth with a three-day total of 872.
Senior Nicole Abelar finished 21st at 219 while sophomore Alexa Saldana tied for 26th at 220. Junior Hyeonji Kang tied for 45th at 227 with freshman Maelynn Kim tying for 55th at 232.
Texas captured the team championship at 851 to finish 12 strokes ahead of Iowa State. Kansas State (866), Baylor (868), Texas Tech (869) rounded out the Top-Five leaders with Kansas (876), UCF (878), Oklahoma State (880), TCU (882) and Oklahoma (882) completing the Top 10.
Individually, Iowa State teammates Liyana Durisic and Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn shared medalist honors at 6-under 207. Texas teammates Lauren Kim and Farah O'Keefe tied for third at 210 while Texas Tech's Gala Dumez joined Svedenskiold a 212.
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
This was the 10th conference championships appearances in Houston history.
The Cougars captured American Athletic Conference Championships titles in 2019, 2018 and 2017 and have never finished below fourth in their history with Top-Three showings in all but one season.
In their most recent appearance, Houston finished fourth at the 2024 American Championships with a score of 2-under 862 at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Fla.
Svedenskiold fired three straight sub-par rounds and finished second at 8-under 208. Abelar and Annie Kim joined her among the Top-20 leaders.
Abelar made a conference championships appearance in her third different league. She finished second at the 2021 Sun Belt Championships with Coastal Carolina and earned Top-15 finishes in back-to-back years at The American Championships in 2023 and 2022.
Kang made her third appearance with her second league. She tied for fourth as a freshman at Hawai'i at the 2022 Big West Championships.
Saldana and Svedenskiold made their second straight appearance at a conference championships while Kim made her collegiate postseason debut.
UP NEXT
Following the Big 12 Championships, the Cougars learn their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show. That show will air at 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, on Golf Channel.
Seventy-two (72 ) teams and 36 individuals not on those teams will be selected to compete at the NCAA Regionals to be held at one of six sites across the country on May 6-8.
Those NCAA Regional sites include Auburn University Club (Auburn, Ala., hosted by Auburn); Tumble Creek Club (Cle Elum, Wash., hosted by Washington); Traditions Club (Bryan-College Station, Texas, hosted by Texas A&M); Forest Akers Golf Course (East Lansing, Mich., hosted by Michigan State); Spanish Trail Country Club (Las Vegas, hosted by UNLV) and East Course – Bermuda Run Country Club (Winston-Salem, N.C., hosted by Wake Forest).
The top five teams and top individual not on an advancing team at each NCAA Regional site advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 17-22 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
