Hyeonji Kang Leads Women’s Golf after The Show First Day

Final Round tees off Tuesday morning at Spanish Trail Country Club
LAS VEGAS – University of Houston junior Hyeonji Kang fired a pair of sub-par rounds during the first day of The Show to lead the Cougars and tie for third at 4-under 140 at Spanish Trail Country Club on Monday.
 
Competing in her first season with the Cougars, Kang opened the tournament with a 71 in the morning and drained four birdies with only one bogey in the afternoon on the way to a 69 to tie with TCU's Lois Lau for third.
 
Starting the afternoon off No. 9, Kang ran into trouble with a bogey at No. 10 but rallied with five straight pars before draining her first birdie of the round at No. 16.
 
The Jeju, South Korea, native moved into red numbers with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole and, following five straight pars, sank back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6-7 to finish with a 69.
 
As a team, the Cougars opened with a score of 298 and bettered that by five shots in the afternoon to stand in eighth after 36 holes.
 
Freshman Maelynn Kim was tied for 30th at 149 while sophomore Alexa Saldana was tied for 42nd at 151. Senior Nicole Abelar was tied for 50th at 152 with sophomore Moa Svedenskiold tied for 56th at 153.
 
UCLA held the first-day lead at 574 to finish one stroke ahead of SMU. Pepperdine (578), Virginia (583), TCU (585), Purdue (586) and New Mexico (586) rounded out the Top Seven with Minnesota (592) and Furman (598) completing the Top 10.
 
Pepperdine's Jeneath Wong and UCLA's Zoe Campos were tied for the individual lead at 138. New Mexico's Lauren Lehigh stood in fifth at 141 with Anna Morgan (Furman) and Lauren Gomez (Pepperdine) tied for sixth at 142.
 
The Final Round tees off at 10 a.m., Tuesday (CST) on the 6,537-yard, par-72 course.
 
Following The Show, Houston will tee off at the MountainView Collegiate at MountainView Country Club in Tuccon, Ariz., on March 15-17.
