HUMBLE, Texas – University of Houston junior Maria Jose Martinez played bogey-free golf through the first two rounds of the Lone Star Invitational on the way to a school-36-hole total of 11-under 133 on Monday afternoon at Golf Club of Houston.
Starting her day off No. 12, Martinez began the tournament with six straight pars before sinking her first birdie of the day on No. 18. After two more pars, the Alvarado, Mexico, native drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3-4 and added two more birdies on her final four holes to cap the morning session.
In the afternoon, Martinez made back-to-back birdies on No. 13-14 and followed with another birdie on No. 18. After two more consecutive pars on Nos. 3-4, she posted five more pars before sinking her 11th and final birdie of the day on the par-4 10th hole.
Her 36-hole total of 133 broke the school record of 135 (66-69), set by All-American Leonie Harm during the MountainView Collegiate on March 10-11, 2017.
Martinez stood three shots ahead of Baylor's Hannah Karg. Kansas' Lauren Heinlein stood in third after a 65 in the Second Round, while Saenz joined Britta Snyder (Baylor) and Geraldine Wong (Texas State) in fourth at 140.
Senior Ariana Saenz was tied for fourth after shooting 4-under 140 with 70s in each round Monday. The Porter, Texas, native began the day on fire with a birdie off No. 12 and an eagle on the par-5 13th hole.
Saenz overcame a double bogey on No. 14 with birdies on two of her next three holes at No. 15 and No. 17. She added three birdies in a four-hole stretch at Nos. 5-8.
She started the afternoon round with a pair of birdies on her first four holes and enjoyed three birdies in a five-hole stretch late on her second nine.
Junior Annie Kim was tied for 24th at 149.
No. 14 Baylor held the first-day lead at 548. SMU stood in second at 574 with Texas State in third at 577.

Following the Lone Star Invitational, the Cougars take their first step in the postseason when they compete in the American Athletic Conference Championships on April 18-20 on Pinehurst #6 at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.
The winner of the annual postseason tournament receives the league's automatic bid, scheduled for May 10-12. This season's NCAA Regionals will be held at University Club (Baton Rouge, La., LSU) Scarlet Course – OSU Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio, Ohio State); University of Louisville Golf Club (Louisville, Ky., Louisville) and Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, Calif., Stanford).
Top teams from each NCAA Regional will compete at the NCAA Championships, set for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
