PALM COAST, Fla. -- Posting a 66 on Sunday, University of Houston sophomore Leonie Harm tied her own school record for the second time this season and set a conference record to lead the Cougars during the First Round of the American Athletic Conference Championships.
Sinking 10 birdies, Harm led the Cougars and grabbed the first-day lead with two rounds left to play. The Gerlingen, Germany, native made birdie on three of her first four holes and then capped her front nine with three straight birdies.
As the wind began to pick up, the 6,198-yard, par-71 Conservatory Course began to play harder. Harm started her back nine with a double bogey on the par-5 10th hole but quickly got those strokes back with consecutive birdies on Nos. 11-12.
Harm, who stands at No. 71 in the latest Golfstat rankings, alternated bogeys and birdies on her final four holes to end the day with a Championship record 66 to lead the Cougars and the field. Her total topped the previous American Championships record of 67, first set by USF's Ashley Burke in 2015 and equaled by Frida Gustafsson Spang of East Carolina in 2016.
She first set the Houston record with a 66 during the First Round at the Mountainview Collegiate on March 10 and equaled that total in the Second Round of the Clover Cup on March 20. Junior Courtney Tibiletti also equaled Harm's record during the First Round of the Clover Cup on March 19.
SMU's Brigitte Dunne stood two strokes behind Harm with a 68, while No. 31 Ashley Holder (UCF) and Ashley Cassidy (Cincinnati) were tied for third at 69.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 2-over 290 to tie for second with No. 39 SMU after the first 18 holes. Houston enjoyed tremendous success on the front nine with the five student-athletes combining for a total of -5.
No. 28 UCF held the First-Round lead at 284. Tulsa (292), Tulane (294), USF (296), East Carolina (299), Cincinnati (301) and Memphis (315) rounded out the field.
Making her third appearance at The American Championship, junior Megan Thothong was tied for 11th with a 72. The Dallas native made three birdies on the front nine and added her fourth and final birdie on the par-4 16th hole to rank second among the Cougars.
Tibiletti and fellow junior Ivon Reijers were tied for 24th with 76s, while junior Allie Andersen was tied for 29th at 77.
While this is the fourth straight season that the conference's postseason tournament has been played at this venue, it is the first time it has been played on the Conservatory Course.
