THE WOODLANDS, Texas â€" University of Houston Women's Golfer Allie Andersen fired consecutive sub-par rounds to stand in a tie for seventh individually and lead the Cougars to a fifth-place showing following the first day of the Jim West Challenge on Sunday evening.
Competing on the 6,138-yard Tom Fazio Championship course at The Club at Carlton Woods, the Cougars posted a team score of 589, thanks to a Second-Round total of 2-under 286 and were one of only five teams to finish the first day under par.
Florida State held the team lead at 15-under 561 to stand eight strokes ahead of Kent State and Texas. Texas A&M stood in fourth at 574 with Notre Dame (576), Missouri (576), Missouri (582), Miami (Fla.) (582) and Texas Tech (582) rounding out the top-10 leaders.
Andersen, who is competing in her first season with the Cougars after playing her first two years at Colorado State, started her day on No. 18 with a par. She followed with a birdie on No. 1 and, after her lone bogey of the round on No. 5, drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7-8 and capped her First Round with nine straight pars on the way to a 70.
In the afternoon session, The Woodlands, Texas, native opened her day with consecutive birdies on No. 18 and No. 1 and moved to 3-under for the round with another birdie on No. 4.
Andersen endured her first bogey of the round on No. 9 and added another on No. 11 before sinking back-to-back birdies again, this time on Nos. 12-13. She fell back to 1-under in the round with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 14-15 but made par on her final two holes of the day to tie for seventh at 3-under 141.
Senior Emily Gilbreth and junior Ivon Reijers were each tied for 22nd after the first day at 145. Both student-athletes posted 73s in the morning round and enjoyed even-par rounds of 72 in the afternoon session.
Junior Megan Thothong was tied for 39th at 148. After shooting a 77 in the morning, the Dallas native enjoyed the Cougars' biggest improvement on the day, bettering her First Round score by six strokes with a 71 in the afternoon session.
Sophomore Leonie Harm was tied for 57th at 152.
Florida State's Matilda Castren held the individual lead at 10-under 134, thanks to a 65 in the afternoon round. Texas A&M's Thanya Pattamakijsakul and Oklahoma's Julienne Soo were tied for second at 137.

FINAL-ROUND PAIRINGS
Monday's Final Round tees off with a 9:30 a.m., shotgun start. The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Texas A&M and Notre Dame.
Anderson will begin Tuesday's Final Round in the second group off No. 4 with Reijers (first group off No. 4), Gilbreth (No. 5), Harm (No. 6) and Thothong (No. 7) following.
