HUNTSVILLE, Texas â€" University of Houston senior Emily Gilbreth stood in a tie for second place with a score of 3-under 139 following the first day of the Bearkat Invitational at Raven Nest Golf Club on Monday evening.
Gilbreth opened her morning with an even-par 71 on the 6,067-yard course and followed that with a 3-under-par 68 in the afternoon session. The Bellaire, Texas, native was only stroke behind leader Elodie Chaplet of Lamar entering Tuesday's Final Round.
With her total, Gilbreth posted a career low. She topped her previous best of 70, set in the third round of the UNF Collegiate on March 8 and in the second round at the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sept. 19, 2015.
Gilbreth was one of four Cougars competing in this tournament as individuals. Junior Kelli Rollo joined Gilbreth among the top-10 leaders Monday and was tied for seventh at 145 after shooting 72-73.
Junior Courtney Tibiletti was tied for 18th at 150, while sophomore Tatiana Pineda stood in 31st at 158.
With only four individuals competing, the Cougars were not eligible for the team championship. Host Sam Houston State held the team lead at 583 with Houston Baptist (588), Lamar (592), McLennan Community College (609) and Incarnate Word (609) following.
FINAL ROUND on TUESDAY
The tournament wraps up with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday. The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from McLennan Community College and Incarnate Word.
Gilbreth begins her day off No. 7 with Rollo (No. 8), Tibiletti (No. 9) and Pineda (No. 10) following.
UP NEXT
Following the Bearkat Invitational, the Cougars will continue their fall schedule at the Jim West Challenge. Houston will compete on the Tom Fazio Championship Course at Carlton Woods on Oct. 9-10 in The Woodlands, Texas.
