FRANKLIN, Tenn. â€" Behind a solid, all-around team effort, the University of Houston Women's Golf program bettered their First-Round score by 17 strokes during Saturday's Second Round to surge into ninth place at the prestigious Mason Rudolph Championship.
Three Cougars â€" sophomore Megan Thothong, junior Emily Gilbreth and senior Raegan Bremer â€" posted sub-par rounds, while sophomore Maddy Rayner improved her First-Round score by nine strokes on Saturday.
With its impressive efforts, Houston posted a team score of 5-under-par 283. It was the second-best team round in school history, trailing only the 8-under-par 280 in the Final Round of the Alamo Invitational on Oct. 28, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas.
The Cougars moved into ninth place with a team total of 583. Georgia held the second-day lead at 562 to finish one stroke ahead of Alabama and two strokes in front of Northwestern. LSU (575), Auburn (575), Virginia (575), Louisville (580) and host Vanderbilt (583) rounded out the top-7 leaders with GRU Augusta (585) behind the Cougars.
Thothong led the way for the Cougars with a 3-under-par 69 on the 6,321-yard, South Course at Vanderbilt's Legends Club. The Dallas native endured only one bogey in her round with four bogeys. Starting on No. 10, Thothong (pronounced Toe-Tong) rebounded from a bogey on No. 15 to make a birdie on No. 17.
She made her move on the leaderboard on her back nine (No. 1). The Plano West Senior High product birdied No. 1 and drained birdies on two of her final three holes before capping her day with five straight pars. Thothong moved into a tie for 18th at 1-under-par 143.
Gilbreth and Bremer also rose in the individual standings after each finished Saturday's Round with 70s. Gilbreth suffered a bogey on her first hole at No. 10 but proceeded to post four birdies over the next 12 bogey free holes to move into a tie for 28th at 145.
Overcoming a 79 in her First Round on Friday, Bremer bettered her previous score by nine strokes. The two-time All-American Athletic Conference honoree made a pair of birdies on her front nine and added two more birdies on a bogey-free back nine to move into a tie for 48th at 149.
Rayner finished the Second Round in 85th at 157, while sophomore and 2015 All-American Athletic Conference selection Yuka Kajiki was tied for 54th at 150.
Alabama's Lakareber Abe held the individual lead at 9-under-par 135 after firing her second straight round in the 60s. Virginia's Lauren Coughlin, the First-Round leader, stood in second at 137, while Stephanie Lau of Northwestern was in third at 138.
