MINNEAPOLIS - University of Houston sophomore Megan Thothong posted a score of 74 in the Final Round of the Minnesota Invitational on Tuesday afternoon to finish in a tie for fifth with a score of 219.
Starting on No. 5, the Dallas native bogeyed No. 6 before sinking three straight pars. She started the back nine on a high note with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 9 and 10 and added another birdie on the 476-yard, par-5 14th hole on the way to the fifth top-10 showing of her career.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 301 to slip into sixth with a score of 897 on the 6,119-yard, par-72 course at Minikahda Club.
"Megan was steady, and she continued her strong play from the summer," said third-year Houston Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell. "Like everyone this week, she has some she can clean up each round, but those are things that are controllable."
Purdue captured the team championship with a score of 884 to finish two strokes ahead of East Carolina. Illinois (887) and Kent State (895) and host Minnesota (895) finished ahead of the Cougars with GRU Augusta (904), Colorado (904), TCU (910) and Texas (917) rounding out the top-10 team leaders.
Senior Raegan Bremer lowered her score for the third straight round, posting a Final-Round 74, to finish in a tiefor 15th at 225. Junior Emily Gilbreth joined Bremer in a tie for 15th at 225, while sophomore All-American Athletic Conference honoree Yuka Kajiki tied for 30th at 228. Sophomore Maddy Rayner tied for 49th at 235.
"I was pleased with how we competed. We had a chance to finish in the top-3, but we beat ourselves in some ways," Chadwell said. "We have a lot of work to do, because we are much better than this."
Individually, Minnesota's Celina Kuenster earned medalist honors with a score of 213. East Carolina's F. Gustafsson Spang finished second at 214, while Linn Andersson of Purdue placed third at 215.
UP NEXT
This is a busy, season-opening week for Houston. Following the Minnesota Invitational, the Cougars will head to Tennessee to compete at the Mason Rudolph Championship this weekend. This will be the first time Houston has competed at this prestigious event.
"Since we didn't play very well in Minnesota, we want to get the taste our of our mouth," Chadwell said. "It's going to be good for us to keep going."
From there, the team will take a few weeks off from their competitive schedule before returning to action at the Jim West Challenge on Oct. 4-6 at Tapatio Springs Resort in Boerne, Texas. A year ago, the Cougars finished second at this event during their final fall event of the season.
