MINNEAPOLIS â€" University of Houston sophomore Megan Thothong posted a 36-hole score of 145 to stand in sixth place individually and lead the Cougars to a fourth-place team standing after the first day of the Minnesota Invitational on Monday evening.
Competing on the 6,119-yard, par-72 course at Minikhada Club, the Cougars were steady throughout the day. Houston fired a team score of 297 in the morning session with sophomore Yuka Kajiki's 72 leading the way. Thothong paced the team in the afternoon round with a 72 of her own as the Cougars posted a score of 299 to finish the first day at 566.
Beginning her day on No. 10, Thothong set the tone early for her First Round. After back-to-back pars to start, the Dallas native sank three straight birdies on Nos. 12-14 on the way to a 73 over her first 18 holes. She added three more birdies in her Second Round to tie for sixth.
Kajiki and Junior Emily Gilbreth were tied for 19th at 150. Kajiki posted three birdies in her opening round to pace the team with a 72. Senior Raegan Bremer was tied for 26th at 151 while sophomore Maddy Rayner was tied for 45th at 156.
Purdue led the first day with a score of 586 to finish four strokes ahead of East Carolina with Illinois in third at 592. Following the Cougars, host Minnesota (597), Kent State (598), GRU Augusta (601), Colorado (601), TCU (603) and Texas (614) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Individually, Minnesota's Celia Kuenster led all players at 4-under-par 140. Purdue's Linn Andersson, Colorado's Esther Lee and F. Gustafsson Spang of East Carolina were tied for second at 141.
TUESDAY TEE TIMES

The Cougars will compete in threesomes with student-athletes from host Minnesota and Kent State in a 9 a.m., shotgun start. Gilbreth will be the first group off No. 5 with Thothong following in the second group off that hole. Kajiki will begin her day on No. 6 with Bremer on No. 7 and Rayner on No. 8.
UP NEXT
Following the Minnesota Invitational, the Cougars will head to Tennessee to compete at the Mason Rudolph Championship this weekend. This will be the first time Houston has competed at this prestigious event.
From there, the team will take a few weeks off from their competitive schedule before returning to action at the Jim West Challenge on Oct. 4-6 at Tapatio Springs Resort in Boerne, Texas. A year ago, the Cougars finished second at this event during their final fall event of the season.
