NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - University of Houston junior Raegan Bremer and freshman Megan Thothong stood among the top-10 leaders after the first day of the Delta Gamma Challenge on Sunday evening.
Competing on the 6,006-yard, par-71 course at Landa Park Golf Club, Bremer posted a score of 1-under-par 141 to tie for fourth, while Thothong (pronounced (Toe-Tong) finished the first 36 holes with a score of 143 to tie for ninth.
The duo helped lead the Cougars to a third-place standing after the first day. Houston fired a team score of 292 in the morning session and bettered that total by four strokes in the afternoon round for a score of 580.
UALR and Idaho were tied for the team lead at 575. After Houston, host Texas State (583), Houston Baptist (585), Lamar (585), Sam Houston State (589), UTEP (589), Cal State Fullerton (591) and New Mexico State (596) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Texas State's Lora Assad, UALR's Sabrina Bonanno and Youngstown State's Aislynn Merling were tied for the first-day lead at 2-under-par 140. Bremer was tied with Idaho's Leilanie Kim for fourth at 141 with Idaho's Kristin Strankman, New Mexico State's Camille Orito and UALR's Katie Reid tied for sixth at 142.
One of the Cougars' steadiest players, Bremer lived up to that billing Sunday. Overcoming a pair of bogeys through the first holes of the first round, the Anaheim, Calif., native rallied with a birdie on No. 11 and closed out the morning session with another birdie to finish at even-par 71.
In the afternoon round, Bremer reeled off 17 pars with a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole for her standing after the first day.
Thothong was equally impressive in her first round of the spring season, posting a combined four birdies through 36 holes.
Competing as one of three individuals for the Cougars, freshman Tatiana Pineda opened her tournament with an even-par 71 and was tied for 24th at 147, while sophomore Emily Gilbreth was tied for 32nd at 148. Freshman Maddy Rayner, playing as an individual was tied for 36th at 149, while freshman Yuka Kajiki posted a 6-stroke improvement from her First Round total to her Second Round mark to tie for 39th at 150.
Freshman Courtney Tibiletti joined Kajiki in a tie for 39th at 150, while senior Courtney Ferguson was tied for 43rd at 151.
FINAL ROUND on SUNDAY
The Cougars will compete in threesomes with Idaho and UALR in Sunday's Final Round with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. Ferguson and Kajiki will start off No. 3 with Gilbreth teeing off No. 2 and Thothong and Bremer going off No. 1.
Individually, Tibiletti will start the Final Round off No. 18, while Pineda and Rayner will begin off No. 17.

UP NEXT
Following the Delta Gamma Challenge, the Cougars return to action on March 9-10 when they compete at the North Florida Challenge at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. It will be the first of two tournaments in the month of March.
