Cougars Conclude Strong Weekend at Christmas Invitational

HOUSTON - The University of Houston Swimming team concluded the 2015 fall season adding seven more top-five finishes to their strong weekend at the University of the Incarnate Word Christmas Invitational Sunday evening at the Palo Alto Aquatic Center.
Houston finished the UIW Christmas Invitational in third place with a score of 1,075. Rice finished in first place with a score of 1,830.5 and the University of the Incarnate Word followed in second ending with 1,470 points.
Sophomore Caitlin Horner was the top point earner this weekend. The Yorktown, Va native captured three podium finishes, adding 81 points for the Cougars. Sunday evening, Horner grabbed third place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.82.
Cameron Balkom captured a podium finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. The Baton Rouge, La. native netted a time of 2:19.74 to secure second place. Teammate Marissa Lehman placed fifth overall with a time of 2:24.06.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Leah Ortiz was the top scoring Cougar in the event. The senior finished eighth overall, swimming the event in a time of 2:15.06.
In the 1,650-yard freestyle, freshman Delia Weber placed fourth overall. The Houston native swam a time of 17:18.10.
In the final event of the invitational, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Cougars placed fifth overall. The team of Horner, Maya Owens, Taylor Derevyanik and Julie Gibson, finished the race in a time of 3:36.33.
"We finished the meet well," said head coach Ryan Wochomurka. "I am proud of how we continued to battle. We are excited to get to training camp and move forward with the championship phase of our season."

UP NEXT
The Cougars will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to kick off the 2016 season at the Arkansas Quad Meet Jan 22 & 23 to compete against Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Clemson.
COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the first time as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 17-20, 2016. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 17-19, 2016 in Atlanta.
