SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- University of Houston sophomore Yuka Kajiki fired a 1-under-par 71 to lead the 23rd-ranked Cougars during the First Round of The Alamo Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Starting on No. 15, Kajiki enjoyed birdies on two of her first six holes to start her round on a positive note. After bogeys on No. 7 and again on No. 9, the 2015 All-American Athletic Conference honoree rebounded with her third and final birdie of the day on the 11th hole and capped her day with six straight pars.
She was one of only 11 six golfers to break par in Sunday's First round and joined Arkansas' Regina Plasencia, Florida's Maria Torres and Lauren Mason of Texas Tech in a group tied for third place. Texas State teammates Lora Assad and Millie Sarhoa were tied for the individual lead with 69s.
As a team, the Cougars stood in a tie for 11th place at 305 with #13 Texas A&M and host UTSA. #16 Florida held the team lead at 293 to finish the first 18 holes one stroke ahead of #6 Arkansas. Texas Tech (297), TCU (297), Texas State (298), Mississippi State (299), Baylor (303), Oklahoma (303), Wisconsin (303) and SMU (304) rounded out the top-10 leaders.
Senior Raegan Bremer and junior Emily Gilbreth were tied for 41st with 77s, while sophomores Courtney Tibiletti and Megan Thothong were tied for 62nd with 80s.
This marked the second time in five months that the Cougars will compete at Briggs Ranch Golf Club. A year ago, the Cougars capped their year with a berth into the NCAA San Antonio Regional in only the program's second year of existence.
SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS
The tournament continues at 8:30 a.m., Monday, with a split-tee Second-Round start. The Cougars will compete in threesomes with student-athletes from UTSA and SMU. Tibiletti will start the day for the Cougars off No. 10 at 8:30 a.m., with Thothong (8:38 a.m.), Gilbreth (8:46 a.m.), Bremer (8:54 a.m.) and Kajiki (9:02 a.m.) following.
The teams are scheduled to compete in 18 holes each day with the final round slated for Tuesday. Fans can follow live scoring by visiting BirdieFire.com and following the appropriate links or by clicking here.
Tuesday's Final Round is scheduled to begin with an 8:45 a.m., shotgun start.
UP NEXT
With the completion of The Alamo Invitational, the Cougars will head into their winter break. Houston opens the spring campaign on Feb. 7-9 when it tees off at the UCF Challenge in Orlando.
From there, the Cougars look to defend their team championship when they compete at the UNF Collegiate on March 7-8 at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. A year ago, Houston won the first team championship in program history while Thothong earned the first individual title of her collegiate career.
