PALM COAST, Fla. - University of Houston sophomore Raegan Bremer capped the 2013-14 season in impressive fashion Tuesday afternoon with a fourth-place finish at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championships at Hammock Beach Resort and Golf Club.
As she has all season, Bremer used a consistent effort all day to finish the Final Round with a 1-over-par 73 on the 6,235-yard, par-72 Ocean Course. Bogeying her second hole of the day, the Anaheim, Calif., native rallied with a birdie on the 380-yard, par-4 fifth hole and then had only one more bogey on No. 10 blemish her scorecard.
Bremer finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament at 225 to earn her fourth top-5 finish of the season and lead the Cougars for the seventh time in 2013-14. She made history earlier this month when she captured medalist honors at the HBU Husky Invitational at Sugar Land's Riverbend Country Club, a first in program history.
Like Bremer, junior Courtney Ferguson lowered her score for the third straight day and tied for 12th with a score of 234. The Clear Lake, Texas, native drained an eagle on the fifth hole on the way to a Final-Round 75 and earned her fourth top-20 finish this season.
Freshman Emily Gilbreth finished 30th at 246.
Competing in its first year of existence with only three student-athletes competing, Houston Women's Golf is not eligible for the team title. The Cougars will field a complete team in 2014-15 under head coach Gerrod Chadwell and assistant coach Mary Michael Maggio.
While they cannot compete as a team in the 2014 NCAA postseason, the Cougars will learn their individual postseason fates during the NCAA Selection Show, scheduled to air at 5 p.m., Monday, April 28, on The Golf Channel.
No. 38 Louisville rallied to post the tournament's best round for the second straight day and captured the team title with a score of 915, one stroke ahead of No. 18 UCF. SMU (928), Memphis (939), USF (944), Cincinnati (950) and Rutgers (991) rounded out the rest of the field.
Individually, SMU's Jenny Haglund won the individual title with a score of 218 to finish five strokes in front of Louisville's Emily Haas. UCF's Ashley Holder (224) finished third at 224.
