SAN ANTONIO, Texas - University of Houston junior Raegan Bremer closed out her First Round with birdies on three of her final four holes to move into a tie for 13th with a 2-under-par 70 at the Alamo Invitational on Sunday evening.
Bremer was one of three Cougars who posted rounds of par or better on the 6,248-yard, par-72 course at Briggs Ranch Golf Club. Senior Courtney Ferguson and freshman Megan Thothong each fired 72s on Sunday and were tied for 24th.
Beginning on No. 10, Bremer's day did not start well with a bogey on the par-4, 10th hole. However, Bremer rallied with a birdie on the next hole and added another birdie on No. 16 before fighting through bogeys on No 18 and No. 2.
Following three straight pars, the Anaheim, Calif., native sank birdies on Nos. 6-8 and wrapped up her day with a par on the ninth hole to cap her round.
"With Raegan, it's the same story but a different day," second-year head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "She finished with a bang to get us out of a deep hole.
Like Bremer, Ferguson ended her round strong. She sank a birdie on No. 15 but followed that with a bogey on No. 16. Although she slipped a bit with bogeys on Nos. 4-5, the Clear Lake, Texas, native rallied with consecutive birdies on No. 6 and No. 7 and ended the day with back-to-back pars on Nos 8 and 9.
Thothong nailed a pair of birdies on her front nine and played a steady back nine with a birdie on No. 7 to join Ferguson with an even-par 72.
"Raegan and Courtney had great finishes to their rounds, and Courtney and Megan were solid all day," Chadwell said.
Other Cougars in action were freshman Maddy Rayner (82, 75th) and freshman Tatiana Pineda (86, t-76th), who was making her collegiate debut.
"Today was today, and the good thing is we have 36 holes left. This is the strongest field we have seen so far this season," Chadwell said. "There is a lot of golf left, and we will get back at it early in the morning."
As a team, the Cougars joined TCU and SMU in a tie for 13th with a score of 296. Arkansas and Auburn held the First-Round lead at 275, four strokes ahead of LSU. Texas A&M (283), Florida State (286), Baylor (289), Texas State (289), Oklahoma (291), Tulane (292) and Texas Tech (293) rounded out the top-10 leaders.
Auburn's Sophia Schubert shot a 65 to open the tournament and stood atop the individual leaderboard. LSU's Caroline Nistrup was in second with a 66, while Texas A&M's Maddie Szeryk finished the first day in third with a 67.
