WEST POINT, Miss. - The University of Houston Women's Golf program posted a team score of 296 on Monday to finish the First Round in fifth place at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational.

The Cougars overcame a slow start that saw their six-woman lineup finish a combined +21 through the first nine holes on the 6,229-yard, par-72 layout. Houston rallied, however, on the back nine, draining a combined 10 birdies as a team to make their surge in the team and individual standings.

If the Cougars looked or played a little rusty early, it was understandable. Monday's First Round was the team's first competition in about five weeks.

Junior Raegan Bremer and freshman Megan Thothong each fired 73s to tie for 15th and lead the Cougars. Bremer was a steady performer throughout the day, sinking a pair of birdies with only two bogeys on her scorecard.

Thothong bogeyed three of her first eight holes to start her day but rallied to sink birdies in three of her next eight holes to move to even par before a bogey on her final hole of the day capped her round at 73.

Gilbreth overcame a triple bogey on her front nine and posted three birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine before finishing the first day in a tie for 23rd with a 74.

Other Cougars in action were freshman Yuka Kajiki (76, t-32nd) and senior Courtney Ferguson (77, t-36th), who was making her season debut. Playing as an individual in her collegiate debut, redshirt freshman Kelli Rollo was tied for 55th at 80.

Host Mississippi State held the team lead with a score of 285 to finish the First Round five strokes ahead of USF. Samford (291) and FIU (294) rounded out the top-4 team leaders.

Individually, Mississippi State's Chieh Jessica Peng fired a 68 to hold the first-day lead. Teammate Ally McDonald, Nicole Autrique of USF and Samford's Bailey Gray were tied for second with 69s, while Devon Spriddle stood in fifth with a 70.

SECOND ROUND
The tournament continues with the Second Round on Tuesday morning. The Cougars will compete in threesomes with FIU and Memphis and start off No. 1.

Ferguson will start the round at 8:52 a.m., with Kajiki (9:03 a.m.), Gilbreth (9:14 a.m.), Bremer (9:25 a.m.) and Thothong (9:36 a.m.) following. Rollo will play with Iowa's Shelby Phillips and Diana Gonzalez and tee off No. 10 at 8:52 a.m.
