EL PASO, Texas - UTEP used a 19-5 run midway through the second half to break open a close game and take a 70-50 win against the University of Houston men's basketball team Saturday night inside the Don Haskins Center.
The Cougars moved to within 38-37 with 16:43 remaining when senior guard Darian Thibodeaux swiped a Miner pass and raced down the court to lay it up and in. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Cougars would get the rest of the way.
UTEP used a 19-5 run during the next 9:41 and built a 57-42 lead when guard Julian Washburn hit a jumper with just 7:02 remaining. The Cougars could manage no more than three unanswered points the rest of the way.
Redshirt freshman guard Joseph Young led the Cougars with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
With the loss, the Cougars saw their season-long five-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in C-USA games. UTEP improved to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in C-USA play.
UTEP forward Gabriel McCulley led all players with 22 points and added a team-high four assists. Washburn finished with 19 points, while John Bohannon posted 14 points with a game-high 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.
