HOUSTON -- The University of Houston swimming and diving team announced its 2010-11 schedule, which begins with the annual Red and White Meet on Oct. 6.
Head coach Mark Taylor says the tough schedule is designed to give his student-athletes a taste of tough competition.
"We have decided to swim the best to bring out the best in our student-athletes," Taylor said. "Every time a swimmer steps on to a starting block they will have to be at their best."
In addition, Taylor, along with his staff, is looking forward to getting his newcomers in the pool.
"We are excited to see our newcomers come in and compete this year and the schedule will be a huge test for them," Taylor said. "Many of the newcomers have never competed against the type of quality opponents that we have on our schedule on a meet by meet basis."
Following the annual team scrimmage to open the month of October, Houston will head north for a dual against SMU on Oct. 22 and travel to College Station, Texas, to take on Texas A&M on Oct. 26.
A home meet on Nov. 6 against Miami (Fla.), is one of two home competitions for UH during the fall season. The Cougars then close out the month with the Phill Hansel Cougar Classic Invitational on Nov. 18-20. Teams scheduled to compete in the meet include, LSU, SMU, New Mexico and Rice.
"Once again we will be hosting a fall invitational that gives our student-athletes the opportunity to post early season fast times and to record NCAA and Conference USA qualifying times," Taylor said.
The year concludes when the diving team competes in the Texas Invitational on Dec. 2-4.
Houston hosts a dual meet against North Texas (Jan. 15) and travels to Arkansas (Jan. 21) and UALR (Jan. 22) to begin 2011. They continue the road stand, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., for duals against LSU, Rice and Tulane.
The 2010-11 regular season concludes on Feb. 9 when the Cougars host Texas for the Third Annual Sprint for the Cure Meet.
Once against, Houston will play host to the Conference USA Championship on Feb. 23-26.
The diving team will compete in the NCAA Zone Meet on March 11-13 before the NCAA Championships on March 17-19. Both meets will be held in Austin, Texas.
