van Katwijk Wins 1-Meter Event at Houston Diving Invitational

HOUSTON - University of Houston senior Ginni van Katwijk was the only competitor to crack 300 points on the 1-meter springboard Thursday during the first day of the Houston Diving Invitational at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
van Katwijk posted 302.85 points during the finals to claim first place in the event. Earlier in the day, the Grootebroek, Netherlands, native set the pace with 269.90 points during the preliminaries.
van Katwijk was part of a Cougar contingent that finished 1-2-4 in the meet. Freshman Courtney Forcucci scored 277.85 points to finish second, while freshman Lacey Truelove placed fourth with 272.10 points.
Kansas' Erin Mertz scored 272.30 points to finish third and prevent a Cougar sweep of the Top Three places.
Arizona's Carly Smith earned 232.85 points to place ninth and led three female Wildcat divers.
Arizona's Matt Bisordi finished with 355.25 points to win the men's competition, while teammate Ben Grado finished second with 345.70 points.
The meet resumes at 11 a.m., Friday with the preliminaries of the men's and women's 3-meter springboard competition at the CRWC Natatorium. Finals for that event are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., Friday.
Fans should note that the meet format was changed from its earlier posted schedule with both men's and women's teams competing in the same event. The starting time for Friday's preliminaries also was pushed back an hour to 11 a.m.
Admission to the meet is free to the public, which is invited to attend.
The meet wraps up at 11 a.m., Saturday, at the CRWC Natatorium with the combined finals of the platform competition.
