HOUSTON - University of Houston freshmen Szintia Szanto and Anna Kiess each posted a pair of individual victories as the Cougar swimming and diving program dropped a 121-101 decision Friday to SMU at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
Szanto collected wins in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke, while Kiess swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard diving competitions.
A native of Budapest, Hungary, Szanto recorded a time of 57.40 in the 100-yard butterfly to start her evening and followed that with a time of 1:06.04 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Kiess, who was honored as the Conference USA Diver of the Week for the first time in her career Tuesday, dominated the diving events. The Berlin, Germany, native scored a career-best 321.53 points on the 3-meter board to take a narrow win over teammate Azul Almazan.
She followed that with a 267.30 points to finish more than 10 points ahead of her closest competitor.
SMU placed 1-2 in each of the first three swimming events and six events overall to build a dominating lead from which the Cougars could never recover.
The Cougars close out their 2004 regular-season home schedule at noon, Saturday against Texas A&M at the CRWC Natatorium. Kristina DeWitt, Lucile Turpin, Brittney Dye and Laura Starr will be honored in a pre-meet ceremony as part of Senior Day.
Admission to the meet is free, and the public is invited to attend.
However, fans will still have another fine opportunity to watch the Cougars in action. UH will host the Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championship on Feb. 26-28 at the CRWC Natatorium.
