Houston, Texas - The University of Houston men's basketball team will hold a Red & White scrimmage on Saturday, November 9, 2002 in Hofheinz Pavilion. Admission to the scrimmage is free and it is open to the public immediately following UH's football game versus East Carolina. After the scrimmage, UH players will be available to sign autographs.
Houston begins its third season under head coach Ray McCallum after finishing last season with an 18-15 overall record. The Cougars also finished in second place in Conference USA's National Division with a 9-7 mark and played in a postseason tournament for the first time since 1992-93.
Senior All-Conference USA performer Louis Truscott is Houston top returning player and will be joined by senior Jeremee McGuire and sophomore guard Bryan Shelton.
Senior guard Marcus Oliver also returns for the Cougars, but is recovering from a torn ACL injury after being named to the C-USA All-Tournament team. In addition, senior guards Julius Keys and Jarrett Sidney will be back from last season.
McCallum has added six new players to this year's roster. Sophomore Andre Owens looks to make his debut as a point guard after he transferred from Indiana. Junior college transfer Anwar Ferguson gives Houston its first 7-foot player 1990-91.
Freshmen Cedrick Hensley, Dwight Jones, II, and Ramon Dyer will be looking to make significant roles on the team early in the season. McCallum also hopes freshman Cedric Fears can contribute after he recovers from preseason knee surgery in a couple of weeks.
Houston will play its first exhibition game against Team Nike on Wednesday, November 13. The Cougars also play the Texas Blue Chips in another exhibition game on Monday, November 18 and open the regular season against Prairie View A&M on Saturday, November 23. All three games tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Hofheinz Pavilion.
