HOUSTON (AP) - Brock Gillespie came off the bench to score 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and lead the Rice Owls to a 71-53 victory over Houston in the inaugural Bayou Cup game on Wednesday night.
The Cougars opened the game hitting just one of their first 14 shots from the field and went on to shoot just 25 percent (7-28) in the first half as the Owls built a 39-21 lead.
Houston closed to to within 13 points, 48-35, with 11:14 left to play as Andre Owens scored seven points and Jeremee McGuire added a dunk shot in that span.
The Cougars couldn't get any closer as Rice's Yamar Diene scored a three-point play on a layup and free throw and Omar Seli-Mance hit a trey from the left wing to extend the Owls' lead to 54-37.
The Owls went on to win their second game of the season, while the Cougars fell to 0-2 in 2002-03.
Louis Truscott led the Cougars with 17 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while McGuire added 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Owens chipped in with 12 points.
Rice also got 16 points from Jamaal Moore and 14 points from Yamar Diene.
Houston will play the Baylor Bears as part of the Space City Classic at Reliant Stadium on Saturday, November 30. The Space City Classic is a triple header that includes LSU vs. Texas A&M at 1:30 p.m., followed by Texas versus Seton Hall at 4:00 p.m. and Houston vs. Baylor at 7:00 p.m.
