UH Swimming and Diving Defeats Louisiana-Monroe

The University of Houston swimming and diving team dominated Louisiana-Monroe, 159-130, in their third home meet of the on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 16) in a NCAA dual meet at UH Natatorium.
The Lady Cougars won 10 of 16 events, including both the 400 yard medley and the 200 yard freestyle relays, en route to their sixth straight victory over the Indians.
Though senior diver Yulia Pakhalina did not participate in this meet, redshirt freshman Azul Almazan stepped in and took a pair of victories on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. Almazan and Smith placed first and second in both events, with Almazan leading all divers with a combined 554.41 points.
Senior Falon Hopkins was strong for the Lady Cougars, taking the 50-yard freestyle (25.03) as well as the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.76). Sophomore Kristen Bay placed second behind Hopkins in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.08, and also placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.12).
Other big performances for Houston included sophomore Vicki Blocker, who won the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.81) and freshman Stacey Williams, who topped both the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.73) and 100-yard freestyle (53.52).
The Houston 200-yard freestyle relay team of Williams, Hopkins, Bay and Shawn Tolliver wrapped up the meet with a win, placing first with a time of 1:39.78. The points for the relay, as well as the 400-yard IM were not counted towards Houston's final winning score.
The Cougars, who are now 2-2 in dual meets in 2002, will host LSU in their final home dual meet of the 2002-03 season in the UH Natatorium on Jan. 17 at 4:00 a.m. Their will be a tour of the new swimming and diving facility, set to open in the Spring 2003, before the meet at 2:00 p.m., and a barbeque will be held in the John O'Quinn Great Hall in the Athletics/Alumni Center following the meet.
Houston travels to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Invitational from Dec. 5-7.
